Leaving our lovely apartment in Lyon, we said farewells to our excellent host Carole and sped off down the A47 to Chambery. We had had a terrific time in exploring the tip of the iceberg of Lyon, walking many kilometres of enchanting streets, wandering in and out of many shops, galleries museums and frequenting many of the bars, cafes and restaurants.

In the pretty city of Chambery, we met another French visitor from 18 months ago, ...

... at 8.30 am. A quick visit to the Tourist information office and we set off on a quite valley walk along the bloated almost overflowing river. That's all we can mange today! 3 hrs later having seen a deer head on, numerous wild flowers and stood in a meadow eating our lunch (no logs or seats) we return in the nic of time before we are forced to hibernate in Elvis for another night while the storms rage up above. It was a building site. The commune were putting up a building and had fenced off part of the aire for access ...

We encountered quite a few tunnels that we had to drive through with some being over 5kms long. At least this saved us having to wind our way through the mountains. Once again there were snow capped mountains on either side of us.

We entered into France and came across a little ski town in the French Alps that was covered in snow. Sophie ...

... average gradient of 8.1%. Usually the reward at the top makes the climb worthwhile, but we were really disappointed with Alpe d’Huez. I don’t know quite what we were expecting but it was a huge ski town which was really commercialised and very touristy with ‘all you can eat’ menus etc, so after a quick picnic in the sunshine we were glad to head back down again to the tranquility of our beautiful campsite. The ride back down was amazing, no icy ...
