Spectacular Salt Flats

Finally we arrived in Uyuni to visit Salar de Uyuni. After the incredibly bumpy 3 day drive to get there we were hoping that they would prove to be as specacular as we had been told and we weren't dissappointed. As an added bonus our hotel had the best shower in Bolivia and great pizza and apple pie. Thankfully the altitude wasn't causing us any more problems and climbing the stairs was finally getting a bit easier.

We took 4x4's out to the flats in groups of 5 and started with a visit...

pre salt flats tour

Arrived at 4 am, a quick nap til 9, scalding hot shower and a GREAT free breakfast! Most hostels offer free breakfast: coffee or tea, glass of juice, bread, butter & jam. But Tonito Hotel, had 2 huge slices of homemade bread (butter & jam), unlimited coffee or tea, fresh squeezed OJ and your choice of a) eggs or b) fruit & yougurt. I got an entire banana & a cup of yougurt! The owner is from Massachusetts and a super nice guy!!!

His hotel also runs tours to Salar de Uyu...

We were in some unheated building at about 4300m altitude. ... but we got much more. The sun was out, but with the wind we all quickly forgot our burns from the previous days and wished we had packed warmer clothes in the vehicle. Soon we were entranced by the other worldly views around us. First we entered into a forest of rocks, which upon further inspection proved to be more fossils. All about six to ten feet high and very rough.Next stop lead us to a field of fifteen foot high cliffs that had all been under water at some point and ...

Conspicuously absent, however, was the good old red & white, the Canadian version I mean, because there were at least three red and white Japanese flags and even, against all odds, the shredded remains of half a Welsh flag.
