Friday visit to Franz Josef Glacier

... long licorice in neon colors and flavors. Very different! We pulled into the seaside town of Greymouth for the evening. As warned, the hotel is pretty rough yet the best in the area. Our first floor very small room had windows that open to the bar and smoking patio about 3 feet away! Today we went up to Franz Josef Glacier for a hike on the ice which was incredible fun! We started the day by getting kitted out in some seriously attractive gear, waterproof over trousers and a big jacket and some lovely boots; we even got some socks, a hat and gloves which was pretty cool and much much needed! Our base for the night was a beachside cottage, basic but comfortable and dinner was over the road at the local inn. On our way back we chanced upon a most amazing sunset. Weds am and after a quick run on the beach it was ...

(Mr H: from historic photos and paintings, it seems that as little as 50 years ago the glacier reached the valley floor; now, the glacier seemed to barely reach halfway down the mountain face.) The photos we have taken aren't half as impressive as the images you find on postcards (which were presumably taken 5-10 years ago). Nevertheless, we were impressed.

We returned to ...
