Bukit Lawang is a tourist hub for those wanting to trek in the jungle to see the many animals, although the main draw is the Orangutans. Unfortunately the trekking is quite expensive for 2 days or more which included camping out in the jungle, so I ended up just doing a one day trek with two lovely girls that are staying beside me Lizzy and Natasha, and had a really wonderful experience.

The trip could have ended right there, and I would still come home raving. Sitting on the rocks watching the river roll by, enjoying the sun -- it was amazing.

Not much sleep for Ian but I managed a few hours........I think. We pulled into a station for a while and when we pull out the sunrise has happened. We are not sure how much longer we've got to Malang but they decide to put the TV on which wakes people it's so loud again! They go through loads of rubbish on the box, then decide on a film.............Rambo II....lol. Ian gives up on sleep so sits watching not loud enough ...

Certainly lives up to the hype.

... to a local up there and he told me that this viewpoint was packed in the mornings with tourists so decided to find a good vantage point lower down on the path up for the morning. Selected a small knoll with a little ‘temple’ on top of it about 100m off the track heading back down. Got up the next morning at 3:30am and set off for the viewpoint. There was a hive of activity going on but most of it involved tourists, both Indonesian ...

... of bumping into a Sumatran Tiger! It’s nice to hear the jungle sounds…from your room but because the room was so grim it was not the experience I had hoped for.

Around 9pm the rain, thunder and lightening came, we hoped this would cool the air down. After Lake Toba it was hot in the jungle!

I am really not cut out for the wild, I think after 11 months it’s only fair I admit this. Yes I can cope with a basic room (just about) but I have to have a ...
