We stayed on the main drag in Fort Cochin, a beautiful, albeit touristy, town on te sea. It's a centuries old trading port on the spice route which has inevitably, a strong Christian influence. I wake up early to pack so I can go to the morning meditation with the sitar and tabla players. We sit on the stage with them. Up close and personal. There are 8 of us. I sit along the wall so I can have some support for my back. They provide us with bamboo mats and the cushions from the chairs in the audience to sit on. I also have my yoga mat. ... Costa-Gamma guesthouse where we stayed who offered us advice, invited us in to share an interesting Indian sweet drink and helped arrange for me to see an eye doctor when I had a bit of an infection. (The eye doctor was interesting in a 1950s way!!).

And there was George, the gregarious cafe owner who told us stories of his ancestry and their involvement with the British empire, and who has written a book about his grandfather which he hopes ...

... br> We set off at 7.45am in our TATA Indica, all comfy and safe with seat belts in the back, a rarity in India. Our driver occasionally keeps us amused with nonsense stories of the Periyar Dam being built with granite and egg gravy, at least that's what it sounded like.
