The last couple of weekends since then I have just spent mucking
around Narkhon Chaisi. Last weekend I went to this new shopping mall called
Central Plaza that has just opened up (it literally opened while we were on Ko
Samet) about a 10 minute taxi down the road from us. It was pretty exciting. It
has Starbucks, wine connection, tops supermarket with allsorts of food you
would have to normally go to a gourmet market in Bangkok to get. It is ...

ThaIsland Time! A taxi, bus and ferry landed us on the island of Koh Samet about 3.5 hours South of Bangkok. Since most of the beach bungalows and villas were expensive and full for the weekend, we picked up a room just outside the entry to the national park, a 5 minute walk to the beach. We ventured out briefly for some food at along the road, it was still raining. The rain had massively dampened (no pun intended) our spirits. We had been looking forward to some beach time after the chaos of Bangkok and to arrive to such poor weather was a bit of a let down. We spoke briefly to 2 girls who had thought the same ...

... gesture for good company. It was a highlight of my time on the island to play with the younger children (with little conversation), and to make true friends with the older children and mother - I spent my nights running on the beach with the older son, and during the day we hung out chatting, and working on his English, which foreign visitors before me had taught him. I will also miss the basic friendships I had with a few of the waiters and several bartenders that I saw frequently, ...
