Turns out the hostel does not exist where stated and most
hotels near the river, about 10 blocks from the Plaza. Had to go to the ferry
terminal to get decent info and a map and then settled on a nearby hotel after
exhausting 3 other, 2 of which were unmanned – 700 pesos and not nice!

We spent some time reading on the beach instead and then headed out to a posh italian restaurant for dinner overlooking the twinkling lights of the boats on the harbour. It was fab. ... Barra was a bit more subdued than Punta del Este. There are no fancy high-rises there, only small hotels, and many private residences. The latter seem to be mostly vacation retreats, and were shuttered for the off season, as were most of the places in Punta del Este. Juan Carlos had told us that, in the off season, the population of Punta del Este is only ~10,000 people, but in the peak season, January and February, it swells to over 500,000, and gets very crowded.
