Incredible day in Meteora

Today was an absolutely brilliant day! It was just one of those days where everything seemed to go right. I like those days. It started out with a 7:30am wake up call, breakfast at 8am with Sheila and Rob downstairs at the hotel, and then a bus from Kalambaka up to Meteora. The bus was scheduled to pick us up from Central Square at 9am and it …

Today was a long day of travelling, but I met some great people, so that helped a lot. I checked out of my hotel in Delphi at 9:30am and went down to the "bus station" down the street.  I got my ticket for €9.10 to Lamia.  I went outside to some café seats to wait for the bus which was coming at 10am and a lovely American …

As we drove up the Gallipoli peninsula towards the Greek border, we reflected on what a great time we had had in Turkey...Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Gallipoli...easily the highlights for us. Now as we neared Greece, excitement grew as it always does when you enter another country. As we came towards the Turkish border, we saw a long line of …

... a little blob of tomato sauce, then they bought out salad, chicken and veges and watermelon, which I felt wasteful not eating, luckily I was at a table of boys and they cleaned it up for me. We went for a little walk around the hotel at the sun was going down and found these two little buildings which I think they much use as chapels and they lit up while we were there which was really pretty. Everyone hung out outside for a bit since it had cooled down and we went to bed at about ...

As the Byzantine Empire's reign over the region began to cede to the Ottoman Turks, the monks needed to relocated to these inaccessible perches to avoid destruction by the Turks. While today one can drive close to each of the six existing monasteries (historically there have been as many as 30 here with these six remaining) their position originally meant that they held an almost unassailable position atop ...

This is a great place to stay for Meteora. Run by a friendly family, very helpful and the rooms are spotlessly clean. We also got a great deal through booking.com. Even included a continental breakfast which was lovely. Highly recommend.
