Another day at CASEM. We have reached the point in our trip where we love our team, but are frustrated by our project. I recall this feeling on service trips from college so I know it is not an isolated feeling, but I feel it anew and from the vantage point of a 12 year old boy. We know we are helping CASEM with projects that they need to have done, but are feeling less than fulfilled by them. Do we, as paying volunteers, have ...

... hike up the old volcano ends with a wonderful dip in the green lagoon created by the crater.

The beginning of the trail was well marked on a rolling hill. We saw our first tucan at the very beginning of our hike. The steeper part was dense rainforest. A major goal for our year was for us to have as many opportunities as possible, individually and as a family, ...

... it was a tiny village but its population has exploded with the tourists who come to see the volcano. There are some great restaurants, ice cream and coffee shops, plenty of souvenirs, and a post office where we bought postcard stamps. Our meeting point after lunch was the park in front of the church.

After lunch we drove to Arenal National Park for ...

... problem, piece of cake, right? Yea, until you step on the platform and look at the third line and the drop off and the length and the speed people are going. And you hear them scream as one by one they take off into the mist. And your eyes open wide in fear and your stomach drops a few feet. Or mine did anyway! And I'm thinking, why did I want to do this? Now there is a "chicken trail" for those who change their mind and want to go back via the sky tram, but my pride won't let ...
