The night before
School's out, work is on pause and the cottage industry is closed for Christmas. It's finally here after months of waiting and we're all beside ourselves with excitement.
The bags are packed (with space to spare thanks to Annette's frugal choice of clothes) and we have even managed to find room for Ellie much to Esther's relief.
We've got so many exciting new experiences ahead of us crammed into a 7 week trip. South East Asia here we come!

Morning of NY
... was 5:45 a.m. We had a knock at the door at 5:40, not quite ready had a nervous rush on, despite a calm morning. I was greeted by a lady claiming to be the taxi driver. All seemed nice at first, but after precisely 16 seconds her persona changed to very frustrated and asked, "what time is the flight?" Of course I had no idea so asked Charlotte..."10:30". What happened next was simply uncalled for. [taxi lady] "your flight is at 10:30...it's 5:45 now, ...
Liverpool.....Yeh, Yeh, Yeh
... to contend with cancelled trains and major crowds. Upper lips remained stiffened, however, and beyond some chaos and misinformation, all remained calm. We fully expected to have to remain in Bath another night and forego our Liverpool hotel reservation. Through some major luck, we heard that one train was going to get through, and although we didn’t have reservations, we threw caution to the wind, jumped onboard in hopes that we wouldn’t be ...
Liverpool is way cool :-)
with a weekend of nothing planned I decided to hit the frog and toad to Liverpool to visit me old china Simon from camp. Jumped on the virgin express which was quite a nice ride. Arrived in Liverpool at 10:30 and hit up a local bar for a quiet ale at the Wellington. Very seedy yet charming pub with old school 50's country and rock music. Met some locals who were hilarious. One was a "10 pound pom" which he proceeded to tell me ...
Easy day =)
... the woods on one side, sand dunes on another with trees lining the whole of the walking areas. When we walked over the boardwalk, we finally got to the beach. At this point the rain had started to spit a little bit, but I didn't care. The beach is lovely, the sand looks perfect and the waves were banging. This is the beach where Coldplay filmed the music video for "Yellow", and it was exactly that kind of a day. The rain was starting a bit more, so on we ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Novello Private Hotel Blackpool
Not so child friendly
We stayed at this B&B in July 2006. The rooms were comfortable and breakfast was good. The clientel in the main was older. The bar only opened when we went down (it's in the basement) and we got the feeling we were distrupting the owners evening so didn't stay too long and didn't go back.
I like to feel at home when i stay in B&B's and couldn't really get comfortable here. Probably wouldn't go back.
OK but not as happening as I expected
I stayed here on a business trip based on other travellers reviews. The hosts are very welcoming. The B&B is good value and decent ensuite, toiletries and personal. Lovely breakfast area. TV and hairdryer in the room. Ask the hosts about parking as it is restricted. When I turned up dinner had finished being serviced at 6.10pm. Apparently people head off to the 7.30pm theatre shows. From the website I thought the bar and restaurant were a bit more happening, but it was closed. Definitely eat out. I went to a fabulous chinese restaurant the Peach and Rose. The clientele of the B&B appears to be older.
Loved it
We went to blackpool for a girlie weekend and booked 3 rooms in the Novello via the internet.
We were slightly woried about staying in blackpool after horror stories about other hotels from our friends. But the couple that manages the Novello are extremely friendly and made us feel welcome and safe as soon as we arrived.
The rooms were extremely clean and fresh with clean towels given every day.
Best food I experienced in a hotel. The cooked brekfast set us up for a day of exploring pleasure beach and the rides. The freshly prepared dinner was delecious. It was all we needed to restore our energies. And after a night seeing a show, it was just gorgeous to go back into a clean very quiet and calm hotel. We felt safe and cosy, slept like babies and were ready for another day of exploring.
It was very relaxing and restfull. There weren't many young people around at the hotel, but no screaming babies either. It was just right.
Wonderful place, have to go back
Mr and Mrs Hopkins are friendly and charming. The homely feel of this hotel is unmistakably unique.
It features top cleanness, excellent amenities and delicious high quality cuisine.
Amazing buffet breakfast that sets you up for the sea air, just a few minutes walk from the hotel and Chef prepared dinner of choice.
Very close to seafront and all main Blackpool attractions but quiet and restful environment.
This hotel provided first-rate value for money and a wonderful experience all around.
The Best Ever!
Although this was my first visit to Blackpool, I have made 7 very long trips to the UK over the years, and I have to say that the Novello is the best and friendliest hotel I have ever stayed in.
My positive experience started with very friendly e-mails, with questions and for booking, from the owner. I could see from his sense of humor that this was a place I wanted to stay. Mr. & Mrs. Hopkins are the friendlest, warmest, people that you could want to meet.
My arrival was met with a welcome cup of tea and a chat. My room, although a single, was much larger than any London single room I've had. It was spotlessly clean, comfortable, and very quiet.
I booked Bed & Breakfast, but arranged for dinner on my arrival day. The food was so good that I ended up having dinner at the hotel each evening of my stay. The dinners, as well as the breakfasts, were wonderful, with lots of choices. And having coffee or tea in the lounge after dinner is a good way to meet the other guests.
In short, a perfect stay - clean comfortable room, great food, wonderful location (just a 5 minute walk to the seafront). I will certainly stay there again.
From home to home.
This review is of my 5th. visit to The Novello Hotel.
As always I received a warm welcome on arrival. Fransje brought us coffee and
biscuits, and whilst we enjoyed them, she and Robert told us of the different work that
been done to improve the Hotel.
Our room was as always very clean and comfortable with hot drinks facilities and
biscuits. It is nice to know the bed is made every day, ones room is hovered, also
bathroom towels changed daily.
The food is EXCELLENT here. Breakfast self services eat as much want. Dinner there
is a choice of three different meals. If you require extra food just ask and you will be
served..
There is a cosy bar for residents to use. If I am going to an evening show and would
like a drink when I arrive back at the Hotel, I tell Robert or Fransje before I leave
what time I expect return, and if it is a reasonable time Robert will open the bar for my
drink, This service applies to all guests.
My visits here are allway very enjoyable. I HIGHLY RECOMEN 'THE NOVELLO HOTEL'
Extra mile
Hotel is brilliant and owners show amazing hospitality. Have stayed in many hotels in Blackpool but I will never have to look again. From start to finish we were treated as friends. Most of the guests had been back repeatedly, since this couple took over two years ago. One guest we met returned 5 times last year!
There is a lift to all floors and my friend, who uses a wheelchair, was helped throughout her stay. Food is plentiful with a good choice and guests stay on half board or b&b basis.
There is no single suppliment which makes a refreshing change. good reductions available for pensioners staying 4 nights or more. Can't wait to go back.
I cannot speak too highly of the whole experience and would recommend this hotel and the lovely owners to anyone.
Great place, excellent value
Completely enjoyed my stay here. Rooms were in excellent condition, and the service was very good. Very nice people. Absolutely excellent value for money. Unfortunately, didn't get a chance to sample the food as I woke up too late everyday that I was there...
Great hotel with very good food!
We had a great break in Blackpool in the Novello Hotel. The staff is very nice and helpful. They gave very good advice on places to see and visit (nice shows in Blackpool!). And they even could suggest a very good place to go walking when we were a bit fed up with all the bars, shops and glitter of Blackpool promenade. We did try to be back by dinner time, because the food is excellent! And their bar is very nice to relax and play some pool.
It is not a place for party animals, and that's why I like it.
Great Hotel (guest house) but
Stayed at the Novello, Blackpool, the rooms are immaculate / clean although a little on the small side (well our room was), no screaming kids running around and no undesirables which was nice. In my opinion the Novello is a guest house more suited for "senior citizens" who are looking for a quiet, relaxing stay in a friendly atmosphere. The food is of a very high quality with the breakfast the best we have had anywhere ! The Propriators / staff are very pleasant and helpful. But i mentioned a "but" which is the only criticism we have about our short stay which was after enjoying a show at The Winter Gardens Opera House we arrived back at the Novello to partake in a beverage before retiring for the evening and found the bar to be closed at 10:50pm. Therefore we only stayed the one night
