Caught the vaporetto which took us past San Michele (the island cemetery for Venice) and out to Murano. ... can only imagine what the prisoners felt. The bridge is called "The bridge of sighs" as the prisoners were heard to sigh as they left freedom and made the short walk to the prison. I reckon many would have screamed too, but "The bridge of screams" does not sound quite as gentle on the ear. The palazzo took us a couple of hours and it was wonderful. ... eat much for brekky. Today we bought a Ferry Pass which gave us access to any ferry for the next 24 hours. Our first stop was San Giorgio, a small island which is best known for the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by Palladio and begun in 1566. The belltower has a ring of 9 bells in C#. There is also a cemetery where the dead were separately buried according to their religious denomination. It is particularly clear to see this in the protestant part of the cemetery. Here there ...

Brilliant place to start the holiday

... quiet ally way where we just sat on the edge of the canal eating our wraps watching the gondolas go past. It was the perfect end to a stressful day and so romantic in the meantime.

The next morning we got nice and early to make the most of the day and to beat the midday hear. We didn't have the best of sleeps because we just had the one fan between us. After having a cold shower and breakfast we headed back to San Marco square to head up the Campanile ...
