... chairlifts to the Mountains station take 30 minutes each way. It was now -17 degrees and blizzard conditions. Quite an epic experience to go up the mountain side in pitch black with snow blowing into your face! At the top we had a short guided tour about how the Northern Lights occurred followed by some viewing time outside. Although the skies did miraculously clear and we saw some amazing stars, the Northern lights didn't make an appearance this time. ...

... reflecting off the thin snow covering. After arriving in Abisko less than an hour later we easily found the hostel we’d booked and soon I was out of the cabin bag and quickly installed by the window where I had a good view outside. I was not familiar with all that white stuff on the ground.

... There were information booths for hiking, climbing, skiing, hunting, and even arm wrestling, but we were drawn to the hiking and camping booth. Very spontaneously, we decided to sign up right then for a hiking trip through Abisko National Park, located in the Swedish Lapland above the Arctic Circle. Looking back, it was the best decision of my study abroad experience thus far.

Hike to the lake

Today we did the 6km hike up to Trollsjon lake at the end of our valley. Quite a strenuous hike as it climbs quite quickly. Then there is an uphill section just before the lake. You cannot see the lake until you get there. It is the clearest lake in Europe. On the way back down we saw our first reindeer , which was very cool.

But we have come a long way to see the polar light so we would regret if we didn't give ourselves the best chance to experience it. We had a perfect clear night and we saw lots of stars.
