The sleepy city by the ocean
We took another night bus from Hanoi to Dong Hoi, an I can't say the experience is much better then the last time. This bus was incredibly dirty and we were not able to even sit near each other. I tried to grab a sleeper seat that was near the floor but kept getting screamed at, saying that that seat was for VIP paying customers only, who had paid …
The largest caves in the world
... because it is hell on earth - their version of the M25 maybe. So with images of pagan syle Vietnamese people sitting cross legged in the road, and a now very over excited guide at the prospect of seeing the requiems, I was extremely dissapointed to see the usual smashed up lorry when we eventually got moving.
Tomorrow the plan is to take a motorbike through the hills down to Danang, which is supposed to be absolutely beautiful.

Paradise By The Vespa Light

We opted out on the wifey program, and headed off on our scooters to find Paradise cave. A bit harder to find, we leveraged our GPS and google maps caching, and had a local show us where it is. Cruising through the area was one of the most impressive things I've experienced. Large water buffalo grazed and worked the fields, the local children ran out to give us high fives and greet us with smiles and excitement, and the sun ...
Cave Explorations
... with some sort of shrimpy fried rice and what we thought would be standard eggplant--but instead we were served round green bitter bits in oil--their version of eggplant. We barely masked our disappointed and thus broke the sacred road rule that one should never apply "how it should be" to a dish before a). seeing it and b). trying it. So with nothing on the evening's agenda, we did what has seemingly since become a Monday night ritual. We watched the new Dexter. ...
Caves and swimming
... to (yet another!) cave. SJW at the front and me at the back, we did a few circles before we got the hang of it. Got to Dark Cave and walked down a man-made board walk with head torches on. A river runs through the cave and completely unexpectedly, our guide said follow me and waded in shoulder deep. She began swimming toward the back of the cave until after about 200 meters of swimming and wading we got to a muddy mound which she asked us all to climb. It was ...

TravelPod Member ReviewsMau Hong Guesthouse Dong Hoi
This guest house is by no means sparkling or brand new BUT we got a private room for three people for 100,000 dong each. Our room had great airconditioning, was clean, we were provided towels and the shower was nice and hot. The owners are incredibly accomidatign and helped us in every way he could. His english was not great, but he truly made an effort to help us enjoy our stay. I would reccomend this guesthouse to any dirty backpacker who needs a nice place to unwind!
