... a pretty little beach, however, that was supervised by the Department of Tourism. There were changing rooms and showers and a team of three life guards was on duty. Surf boards and other water sports equipment was available for rent and refreshment was available from local vendors. A very pushy beach-chair lessor persuaded us to rent his wares.

In researching things to do in Tobago, one priority was clear. The Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve was created, amazingly, by an ordinance in British Parliament in 1776, making it the world's oldest such reserve, we are told. Ted and Alison are both professional biologists and foresters so a guided tour of this tropical rain forest was not to be missed.

The biggest difference I saw, now 60 years since my last visit, was an almost total loss of colour. Where the reef had been miraculous in blues, yellows, reds and pinks back then, it is now mostly an olive drab. Heavy Caribbean surf pounds into the reef out there, dissipating energy in a spectacular display of crashing white crests on blue sea.
