Cradle of the Spanish Reconquest

.....or "The Christians Get Nasty Back!" We've driven out from Bilbao about 3 hrs. We drove mostly down the coast--lots like highway 1 down the California coast. Some very beautiful sights....after getting used to driving a car the size of a large anchovy can and the stick shift (which I haven't driven in over twenty years, I'm sure!) I was able to allow the sights to sink it. A few missed turns--thank ...

Our Day in Aviles - St Augustine's Sister City

... dish for dinner that neither of us can remember what it's called. It was sort of like cordon bleu but flat and with beef instead of chicken.

After dinner, we tried some shots that are typical Spanish digestifs. THe guys had the herb flavored and the girls had the honey flavored.

After finishing dinner, we took a walk around town and went to ...

Nationacal Parqu Picos de Europa

We are staying in a little village called Avin. We visited Cangas de Onis which is a pretty little town with an ancient bridge. We went to the seaside at Llanes and went on a cliff top walk.

Next day we went to Desfiladero de Cares. The pathway was made at the beginning of the 20th centuary by the workmen who blasted out a course for a canal to supply water for hydro-electicity for the area. The walk is from Poncedos to Cain and winds it way ...

Asturias... The perfect Spanish senorita is ... Brazilian??!?!

... In fact, they're probably the ones who invented the look!

I have developed numerous fetishes after all these visits to Spain - I've now got a thing for Spanish hotel receptionists, flight attendants, bus attendants, grocery store cashiers, department store salesgirls, museum security guards, waitresses, lawyers, cheese ladies, and even fish gutters. And believe me, none of that previous sentence was a joke ...

Final Excursion to Asturias

... high, and I felt a good night ahead of me. We went to a bar not too far from the restaurant. There were probably 15 people in the bar, all sitting down, all slowly sipping on a drink. We all took the bar by storm, some of us enjoying Heinekens and other taking down some red wine. We began to get silly and start a dance party in the bar among the 12-15 members of our program to the American/Euro music that we all have grown to love. The 12-15 of us easily outdid every other ...

The end of the road

... road follows the riverbank through alpine meadows and then through amazing gorges, some, like the Desfiladero de los Beyos, narrow to about 20 feet wide, with cliffs towering above and the river far below. When the gorges open out there are views of the high Picos, at this end up to and over 2,500 metres (8,000 ft), jagged limestone crags with snow in the crevasses. We went as far as the Puerto del Ponton, the head ...

Pilgrimage to Gijon

... s running of the bulls. The bulls did well. In the first running they stamped thirty men and sent six to hospital. One man, running next to a huge black beast, belted it in the head with a rolled up newspaper. The bull turned and triumphantly caught the runner under his t-shirt with its horn. The runner was pulled along, freely bouncing up and down on the cobblestones, until his t-shirt ripped and he lay motionless on the ground ...
