Liste La Coruña

A slow morning saw us arrive in A caruna around 2:30p for a quick tour. A beautiful city where we had an excellent lunch (more kids running through the streets while we devoured raciones and wine. Yum!!) A 6ish departure for our long drive to Llanes in Astoria. We finally ...

We woke up to find ourselves at a very local place. It was the beach the folks from a caruna come to to get away from the city. And most (as in everyone but us) of the people there had "summer" campers. So we made like locals and enjoyed the beach, Everett doing ...

... including real "pilgrims") we were back on the road to A Caruna where Ev had found a seaside campground. Back on Spanish time we had an delightful meal of Spanish tortilla (potato omlette) around 9:30 and the kids were in bed by 10:45. Yikes!!

                     

... and magical stories), San Andres (Andrew) was jealous that his brother(?) Santiago (James)'s pilgrimage site got so much traffic and was so well known, and his was not. So, he decided to make the village really hard to get to, and then made a reward for everyone who made the pilgrimage. Maria told us that everyone must come to San Andres de Teixido at some point, and if they don't make it in this life, then they will come back as an insect in San Andres ...

... sort of place in the middle of the woods. It felt exactly like camp-- we were in rooms with bunk beds, ate in a cafeteria together, played pool and walked on "Galician stilts" in the rec room, and played an impromptu game of soccer on an open field. People were making derogatory jokes about "Camp DIM" because we were not allowed (or able) to go out to bars, but I think many people, myself included, appreciated the chance to bond as a group.

... we wandered around time, and near the town square and harbor to eventually find a restaurant to eat at for dinner. Later, after my grandmother and Stee returned to the yacht, I went with some of the crew to find a busy dance club on a Wednesday night. We struck out so we found a small bar to hang out and drink for awhile.

We spent the night anchored in the harbor.

... this promise to myself. In fact, I think I'll make another promise to myself to one day return to La Coruna, once more.

After the beach, I headed over to FNAC to see if I could buy a pre-paid card to recharge the minutes on my cell phone. I realized that I've crossed a very dangerous line with my Spanish - the girl wasn't understanding me, and I wasn't understanding her, when she was trying to explain that ...

Today we visited A Coruna, it is most famous for the Torre de Hercules.  It is the world's oldest functioning lighthouse, it was built in the 2nd century.  Legend has it that Hercules slew the giant Gerion here and buried his head where the tower now stands.  When we got there they were closing up and the first man we spoke with did not want to let us in, but the second man talked to Eric & I who do no speak Spanish and he took pity on us and let us go up quickly.  We ...

... We laten de boot vooranker liggen en met de rubberboot gaan we opnieuw naar het stadje. Betanzos is een zeer oud stadje met vooral veel kerken uit de 14 eeuw. Betanzos is rondom ingesloten door de Rio Mandeo en gebouwd op een hele hoge heuvel, wat heel wat gesjouw oplevert.
