... see empty book cases. There is enough cases to hold 20,000 books. At night, we are told, the lights from the memorial shine up into the night like it is on fire.

We ended our tour at the steps of the Altes Museum with the Berlin Cathedral in front of us.

From here, Chas and I went back to the hotel and collapsed. We fell asleep shortly after this.

As you can tell we have walked our feet off today, our first day in Berlin. We are staying a couple of blocks from Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstrasse, and pass it every time we go out, so that wasn't far. It was then on to the NZ Embassy further up the road to vote. A left on Leipziger took us to Potsdamer Platz, north of that is the Holocaust Memorial and the Brandenburg Gate, along Unter den Linden with its road works all along the middle ...
