Hidden Cyprus

... so many. The locals know about them but they try to keep this information for themselves.

Larnaca district, where Lazarus the biblical saint who Jesus resurrected from the dead, established one of the most gracious churches, where bells bellow just as they did a 1000 years ago. Is really one of the most underdeveloped of the main towns.

Its night time and there are lots of ...

PANAGIA TON AMBELION -PAST AND PRESENT

... again of my childhood.

This little church is situated just a couple of miles from Larnaca, near Aradipou.
It is on the old road of Larnaca-Nicosia.
Difficult for me to recognize the area because the village of Aradipou has so much stretched out and it is as if it has been united with Larnaca.
Everything is so different now, I believe the church is found very near the industrial area.
I can't see the fields we ...

THE MAKENZI AREA IN LARNACA

... from Larnaca and tourists enjoying their morning and late afternoon walks in this area out here. A place with sports facilities for all ages.

NOTE:
I received an e mail from a Turk friend this morning after this entry, who wanted to remind me that those days of the War, these Turk-Cypriots suffered as much, even more than Cypriots..
They also had their houses taken, and actually this area of Makenzy ...

It is actually the only surviving Arab monument in Cyprus, built in 1816 over the tomb of Umm Haram, and was renovated taking its present appearance.

In Ottoman times, it was a Tekke. In the year 2002 a new renovation and ...

CYPRIOT HEAVY ACCENT

... deal with commerce so well, that they even sell the air!

At first I had not seen the sign, and I had no idea what they were talking about, until I was asked to go and take a picture of this sign, which I have attached in my entry.

You see, when a Cypriots says that he sells the air, it means that the person who is operating the business -usually a shop ...

The worst moments of my life were in July 1974 when the Turks invaded Cyprus. I was on the island then, and I clearly remember the threat and us running in the rifle pits to be saved!

The long watches of the nights without sleep, hoping that parachutists won’t be dropped in our city ...

... had been too small. First of all, different airline from this one and I could tell from the agent's bored look she really didn't give a flip that Ms. Ginormous spent 10 hours wedged into a coach seat. I took a discrete picture of her for your viewing so you tell me if the seat being too small was just a figment of her ample imagination.

When she hoisted her 300 pound plus body of size out of the chair to go to the bathroom some kids took that ...

Where Shopping is a Pleasure

... D cell batteries, condoms, lube, lighters and cigarettes. Now how is that for before, during and after needs all in one stop?

There is a lesson to be learned here from all this. Think about it for a moment...20 years ago this type of display much less selection in Bulgaria would have been unthinkable under communism. In 2009 in our supposed home of the free such a display still is unthinkable. I mean we can't even look at the ...
