Jungle Jeannie'S By The Sea Hopkins

On Thursday we went to Hopkins (a little village south of Dangriga which is spread out along an area of coast. I can't remember how much we’ve said about Belizean buses yet, but they’re a bit different to English ones!!! We kept stopping (fairly close to the bus station) firstly for the driver to get some Doritos, then for someone on the bus to hop of and buy what looked like a LOT of chicken, before jumping back on, all of which meaning ...

... and are eager to make friends if only for a few minutes. After one more night in Flores we were off on another bus to Belize city followed by a boat ride to Caye Caulker. Crossing out of Guatemal and into Belize felt alot like being a refugee. So we went to Hopkins planning to spend a couple nights to see the beaches we heard were beautiful and ended up staying a week (of course). We didn't even know at the time but it turned out that the weekend we were there was Hopkins Day weekend. So this usually sleepy town was bustling with people. ... it was going to be lift right off us. It managed to stay put but did spring a leak making for a soggy and uncomfortable night. Some less fortunate than us did have their tents collapse and they ended up sleeping on the beach after the storm passed. Much to the delight of a load of bloody sucking mosquitos. In the morning, the crew promised us beds for the next night. They were good to their word and they turned out to be some of the best digs we got in Belize. After more fun ...

... Most of the young people are here because their parents have moved out here and although they appreciate it is a beautiful place...there is not that much to do by means of entertainment. So in a united front we have created our own entertainment, kayaking, eating, drinking, chilling etc. It's the cafe today and we are having a bbq which i am genuinely excited about, but it's my last one so it will be sad to say good bye to everyone. Next entery will be from Peru...can't wait!

... you do not tend to see these tourists. In fact, I only ran into two backpackers on my entire time in town. There are some expats here for sure, but not many of the tourist types. Shortly after, we learned that there were many little problems with the house including no hot water, mosquito nets that didn't cover the bed, overpriced and not tasty dinners that we agreed to in a moment of severe hunger, and a sketchy Rasta named Elvis who was Trish (the owner)'s lover/cook/employee.
