Up until Vientiane, we had stuck to the traditional backpacker route for travelling through Laos (Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng to Vientiane), we were therefore both itching to explore some more remote places. An opportunity to do this came at Thakhek, in the form of the Konglor Loop.

The loop is basically a three day, 500km road trip by …

... very large and other areas are like a smooth round tunnel that has been carved by rushing water for years. Its amazing staring into the pitch black and not being able to see where the cave walls turn next but the driver seems to know the next turn by memory. So much fun!

I bump into a French family who were at my last accommodation (the family are travelling for three months through Laos and Cambodia and doing schoolwork as they go; kids 8, 11, 13.Ii had ...

... matter which one you choose.

The opening to this cave was huge, with a small stream running through. We had heard you
could swim in the stream but it didn't look that appealing at the time we were there as it was well into dry season. Perhaps just after the wet season it is better suited for a dip.

It is a 27km ride backtracking to the main highway and with four of us now on the adventure we concluded there must be a ...

... road to Cool Springs, which was meant to be a lovely seclude swimming spot, but we were greeted by a group of schoolboys drinking beer and swimming instead, and xwe weren't hot, so didn't bother with a swim (although I did get a piccie with the boys and offered some beer in a cup made from a plastic bottle!).

It took us about another 90 minutes to do the 60km to Konglor, via winding roads, police checkpoints with blocks of wood and nails as spikes, ...

... houses to see the village. It turned out it was some festival on that day, related with food and crops. Nevertheless people were in the fun mood. You might think it was some bigger feast, but mind you, it was a village of maybe 80-100 people with wooden houses, dogs, pigs, hens and cocks running freely. In one of the houses there was this typical, small platform, balcony type of thing which miraculously fitted lots of people! Huge speaker were rumbling loud Lao ...

Very sophisticated looking hotel. Reached there late. Hard to locate the hotel late at night (as their signboard werent lighted. Other shops around there were the same too). The hotel staffs were great. Informed them will be arriving late and to my relief, they did inform their security guard to wait for our arrival :-)
