Up until Vientiane, we had stuck to the traditional backpacker route for travelling through Laos (Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng to Vientiane), we were therefore both itching to explore some more remote places. An opportunity to do this came at Thakhek, in the form of the Konglor Loop.
The loop is basically a three day, 500km road trip by …
Initially, one of the reason I chose to visit VangVieng was to ride in hot air balloon. I think it's the cheapest in the region. Unfortunately, I was there at the wrong season. They don't operate during dry season. Sob sob.
So, since we are lack of time, I chose to go halfday mountain trek and river tubing. Took a ride in songthaew, …
... with flooded land and dead trees everywhere. Just when we thought we must have got lost on the only road there was, we saw a sign for Sabaidee Guesthouse in 6km and made it just before dark at around 5pm. For 60,000 kip (a fiver) we stayed and then had a great BBQ and beers chatting with the other 10 people staying, and a very late night for us at 11:30pm!

The rest of the day was largely uneventful with no further incidents though my attitude on the bike was much more cautious. The days ride ended with the last 10km on very loose shingle and after slowly and carefully maneuvering through this ...

Very sophisticated looking hotel. Reached there late. Hard to locate the hotel late at night (as their signboard werent lighted. Other shops around there were the same too). The hotel staffs were great. Informed them will be arriving late and to my relief, they did inform their security guard to wait for our arrival :-)
