... bus. Maybe unsurprisingly, the bus was not that popular and only half-full (or half-empty, if you want), so everyone could take two seats. For the tiny Asians it was like a queen size bed, for me it was good enough. Of course I was the only tourists and no one in the bus could speak English (except for a girl that started writing me messages on her phone, cute), so it was a quiet trip, only me and my thoughts. Still the others in the bus were nice and stared politely at ...

... still strongly recommend visiting Tangkahan if your in North Sumatra, hanging out with the elephants was one of our trip highlights without a doubt.
Once we returned back we just chilled and organised a private car for the 8 hour drive to Lake Toba the next day. The tourist bus was only £5 cheaper but this way we had 6 seats for 4 people and we got to stop in Berstagi for lunch and at a 120m waterall just outside of Lake Toba called Sipisopiso - try saying that 5 times!

The traffic in Java is bad but the roads are even worse. It felt like the bus had square wheels with no suspension as we were thrown in every direction as we chugged along. The ...

... attached a map of Bukit Lawang, it’s the best I could find and for anyone wanting to go I hope there is enough information here. There is no wi fi or internet at any guesthouse and there is only 1 internet café ( 10,000 rupiah an hour) so it is ideal if you want to cut off from the world. People actually talk to each other as you can’t get Facebook or Candy Crush!!

In my opinion the best places to stay are the far end by the Orang Utan Centre, Jungle Inn, ...
