Day Trip to Ancient, Ancient Greece

... grave robbers found the tomb and emptied it. This could have happened thousands of years ago- no one knows. Now it’s just an empty tomb you can walk into. It’s massive and definitely gives you an eerie feeling.

One of the many mysteries of the Mycenaeans is what became of them. There’s definite proof they existed but no one knows what happened to them. They just disappeared off the history map one day. Historians speculate either a ...

Day Trip

... while we at the theater, there was an archaeological dig going on just a few feet away. I don’t know if they had found anything at that point in the dig but it looked like an area where they could have come across some interesting artifacts.

Epidavros is most famously known for its theater but there are also remains of an ancient healing sanctuary. All you see today is rubble all over ...

Be Careful What You Say

... are and how perfect the acoustics are. Standing at the center focal point of the theater, just the sound of your feet scuffing against the dirt rushes back against you from the empty rock seats amplified several times over. No problems hearing the actors during a play. If anything, you have to be careful what you do say.

Mostly all original rock, only a few upper edges where the ...

Our first stop in Greece

... but we found a place to stay and took a taxi there since the train station was outside the town. our budget hotel is actually quite nice and we walked through the cute little town to get some dinner, so many shops and cafes here it is ridiculous. we wanted to see the Temple of Apollo in Ancient Corinth but didn't get the change to because it was too dark and to late by the time we got there. it's ok, there is an even better Temple of ...

Santorini : Aug 21 - 28

So here is what our week in Santorini consisted of. Every morning we had coffee, orange juice, bread and jam, and yogurt with honey for breakfast. It was really good! Their yogurt was sooooo thick! it was definitely not low fat yogurt. When we first got into our little villa/apartment, we quickly unpacked then went to the pool. We had such an awesome view from our pool. We laid by the pool for the rest of the afternoon...then went across the ...

First Class to Athens

... morning we got the train and headed to Thessalonika in the North of Greece where we just stopped over for the night and treated ourselves to a TGI Fridays! We stayed in probably the dodgiest hotel we've stayed in so far which I think was mainly used for rooms to rent out by the hour- if you know what I mean and the whole place looked like something out of Trainspotting! The next day we boarded the early morning train heading foe Belgrade, Serbia.

Seeing the Acropolis

... since Prehistoric times. Caves on the south slope were first occupied in the Neolithic period (3500 - 3500 BC) while traces of habitation have been found on the north part of the hill in the early and middle bronze age (3000 - 1600BC). In the 13th century BC a local ruler occupied and fortified it with strong walls 760m in length. This may have been an attempt to repel Dorian invasion. According to myth, Theseus was the first to unite the inhabitants of ...

Athens Olympics

... the Games. Just like the rest of the US, we really fell in love with the woman's gymnastics team. So much so that after they won the gold, my roommates and I were overcome with Olympic fever and decided right there on the spot to drive to Atlanta. I went to work the next day and told my boss that I would need a few days off of work, knowing that if he wouldn't allow it I would quit and take my burger-flipping skills elsewhere. He agreed and I was able to postpone my retirement from ...
