... The sky's parted somewhat and I had a clear climb with even the glimpse of some sunshine every now and then.

Somewhat like the Galibier this climb unfolds before you, snaking its way up the valley before its final tilt skywards in a series of long ramps and one real kicker at the top.

It was a stunning climb and a hellraising descent on the freshly TDF tarmac road.

    Tourist in Lourdes

A travel blog entry by markrathmell on Jul 25, 2014

Today was to be the tourist day, we all had our usual breakfast courtesy of Jean Jaques and Merete. We then walked about 3 klms to Lourdes to have a look around. Lourdes is very intriguing in the 1850s a young girl was at a local cave and she saw Virgin Mary. She was told to dig for water, she then saw her a further 17 times. So from that the tourist town of Lourdes was built. There are 15,000 people living in Lourdes, at its peak it had 680 hotels the most of any city outside Paris. ...

    The Hautacam

A travel blog entry by markrathmell on Jul 24, 2014

Today is another big day for the Tour de France. The riders make their way up the Col du Tourmelet, then onto the hautacam. We woke early once again, breakfast with Jean Jacques. Then rode from our accommodation to Lourdes. We then joined the bike track, which was once a railway line, so the gradients are great. Seems bizarre to ride flat roads again compared to all ...

    Col du Tourmelet

A travel blog entry by markrathmell on Jul 23, 2014

Again breakfast of champions with Jean Jacques. We loaded the van and drove to Luz-St-Sauver. The climb out of the town was great gradual 7%. On brand new hot mix, so smooth. The climb was long at 19klm. The views on the way up was simply amazing, the best views of any climb that we've done. We stayed at the top for an hour to take in the views. Words can't explain the view, the feeling of being on top of the ...

    Col du Aubisque

A travel blog entry by markrathmell on Jul 22, 2014

We woke at 6:30 early for an early breakfast Jean Jacques the chef had put on a wonderful spread, croissants, bread, juices, fruits bacon and eggs. We then left around 8:30 to transit to Arrens-Marsons we then started the climb up the Col du Soulor. Steep start out of the town quite grippy. It then levelled out a bit , we found a lunch spot for our return. We certainly noticed that the buildings were much ...
