... wonderful canals threaded through the town and walking was easy.
Our apartment was overlooking one of the canals and we were always hanging out the window enjoying the view. We had a large 3 bedroom so we had plenty of room for everyone and most importantly for Mike to cook for us. We were also close to the oldest pub in Belgium which has been trading for 500 years. Obviously, we had to check it out.

The border crossing from France into Belgium was a non-event - with the newly created Schengen zone which includes most of Europe, it seems that the border posts have been done away with. All we got was: "Belgium 800 metres" and then several signs after that giving you the speed limits for Belgium and then a sign "Belgium" and we were suddenly no longer in France!

... some sleep but there was a free walking tour starting at 2.30 so I pushed on. The tour was themed around the movie "In Bruges", so the guide pointed out the major sites that featured in the movie and gave us some extra info as well. The guide was American, and spoke very slowly and loudly, which I'm sure was great for the people who struggled with English, however for me it was very irritating by the end of the tour (it took 2 hours, I reckon you could have done it in ...

... anyway. We did not take any chances at the others; we stayed up close to their stern even though it caused great turbulence.



Eventually we arrived at Middelburg and the harbour master showed us to the inner harbour (yet another lifting bridge) and alongside another boat, which Isi had to reverse again, and did it OK! Phew! The box moorings as we came in didn’t look wide enough for us. John, bless him, went to get Isi some crisps ...
