... pool, which was refreshingly ice-cold. Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter, but thank goodness there is little to no humidity. Last Saturday, we were feeling pretty ambitious, so got up early and caught a bus to El Escorial, a town about an hour outside of Madrid by bus. The most famous building there, the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, was the home of royal families during the sixteenth century. It was built in the middle of the 1500's, but is impeccable today. It houses the tombs of many of Spain's kings and queens, including those whose children later became royalty. ...

Today we visited the small town of Buitrago del Lozoya. What a wonderful little village. We parked beside the main square, Plaza Picasso.

Our first stop, of course, was for coffee and a rest room. At random we entered the Meson Serrano. We each had a coffee served in a glass. The interior was rustic. The bar was a thick, highly polished single piece of wood. The bar and the paneling reminded me of knotty ...

The wait was definitely worth it though, as El Esc is most famous for the Monasterio de la San Lorenzo, a monastery built by Philip II. It was extremely annoying having to carry my bag around when I had planned to ditch it at the station in Madrid cos it was 46 degrees, but a woman started babbling to me in Spanish and I forgot. Ah well.
