The blue flames were flickering away, ethereal and enchanting. Our group was the second down, so we had it mostly to ourselves for quite a while. The fumes were quite ...

We were quickly running out of time, so I said yes to the Cafe Lava guy and told Nikki and Steve to get our bags off the roof of the bus. The driver was pretty much refusing to take them off, and when the Cafe Lava guy saw that the bags were on the bus, he started laughing nervously and walking backwards... saying that they are not allowed to take business away from the bus drivers. ... just give you a welcome drink, but had two coolers of guava and mango juice to which you could help yourself. This trip has had a tendency to cause us to revert to freeloading student tactics – taking extra toilet rolls from decent hotels so we don’t have to buy them from the basic ones, always taking the dental kits to use the brushes to clean bike chains and gears – so after having drunk four glasses and filled my water bottle with guava juice I figured it ...

... of hundreds of volcanoes in the archipelago, the most volcanic country in the world. The one that attracts the most tourists, for its moody lunar backdrop as much as for its smouldering crater, is Mount Bromo in east Java, a few hours from Malang. I took a tour and we set off early in the morning to catch the sunrise over the mountain before climbing to the summit. That was Java. Next stop - Bali.
