... straightforward, and fairly easy. It’s a road, steep in places, but very manageable (a family staying at our hotel had taken their 3 and 5 year olds up the day before with no issue). We reached the rim with 1.5 hours, and another 20 minutes took us to the bottom of the crater.

The blue flames were flickering away, ethereal and enchanting. Our group was the second down, so we had it mostly to ourselves for quite a while. The fumes were quite ...

... so random. We weren't even expecting breakfast, but we all ate every bit of it. We then headed out on a walk up to the edge of the crater, to look over the sea of sand towards Mt. Bromo itself, and analyse the days walk. Countless amounts of people drove past on motorbikes, in 4x4's and horses asking if we wanted to be taken to Bromo. Falling into Bromo would be instant death, which probably explains the look of terror on many of K's photos. A good way of describing the crater was both eerie, and mystical, it almost looked like it was breathing with a loud roaring sound. K shakily walked back down ...

... remain stationary for the next 15 minutes. Then suddenly one of them moved an arm. Then nothing for another five minutes. An episode of 24 it wasn’t! We stuck it out for about 25 minutes, but without understanding the narration and with the lack of on-screen action, we gave up on our attempt at local culture. Our becak driver had waited for us whilst we visited the palace, and then took us on to a batik art gallery, a restaurant for lunch, a gelato shop for dessert, and ...

... of hundreds of volcanoes in the archipelago, the most volcanic country in the world. The one that attracts the most tourists, for its moody lunar backdrop as much as for its smouldering crater, is Mount Bromo in east Java, a few hours from Malang. I took a tour and we set off early in the morning to catch the sunrise over the mountain before climbing to the summit. That was Java. Next stop - Bali.
