Well a part of the holiday I have been looking forward to has finally arrived; we are in Tuscany. I had a diggin's of a time settling on accommodation here as I weren't sure how long it would take to drive around and I also wanted to get a feel of the countryside. I ended up booking this place cos it looked beautiful, had a big pool and was close to San Gimignano, Greve and Siena. The only problem I envisaged, which turned out to be well founded, was that it is in a very mountainous ...

It was accompanied by a green salad made with a type of tender green Paola said was Valeriana. It looked and ...

... as if it was a cathedral. It is 96 degrees here today so alot of us were wearing shorts and we had to wear disposable shawls to cover up for the church , they're so cute !! (see pics). We also climbed a tower in San Gim, from the top you could see the whole town. San Gim is smaller than Siena which is hard to imagine!! But both San Gim and Volterra have contradas ...

    Happy Birthday Mark!

... so easy when you know how).

We had a nice dinner and then got out the cake, "tartufone." It was quite awful and tasted a lot like you'd imagine a sponge would taste. It seemed funny that this type of cake is so popular in a country full of so many delicious foods. Anyway, Mark enjoyed opening his card and present, and we played some card games and had a fun evening in this cosy countryside apartment,
