... few days playing cards with our fellow guests - Paul, Sally, Sam and Eleanor - hi guys and hope he rest of your trip was less strenous than that climb to Ephesus!

The weather was truly toasty which made the fact that the sea was icy a rather unexpected surprise. We'd taken a boat trip to explore some of the small islands lying off the coast and at the first swim stop we were itching to cool off in the beautifully clear blue waters - and ...

Homer and Lesbians

... executing all the adult males. Though the edit was voted down before any action was taken, the idea of Lesvos with only female inhabitants was born -- hence the term "lesbian".

Escape from the Isle of Lesvos...

... cold, the rain sends a chill through your bones. I'd like to visit Eressus, the birthplace of Sappho, and the petrified forest on the west side of the island as well as the little towns tucked into crevices around the island. But when I go to rent the car and inquire as to the schedule of boats to Turkey for our eventual exodus, I hear that phrase that sounds like a bad joke...you can't get there from here...it's winter...no you can't fly ...

Life is good

... taverna the recipient patronizes and all evening men drift by to shuffle the envelopes and put theirs in a pocket. Kostas had just taken us for a visit to a Greek Orthodox Church which is not open to the public, but on Saturday evenings the priests open it up to prepare for Sunday and we were allowed to visit. An elaborately carved floor to ceiling facade, or iconostasis, screens the priests from the congregation. We also climbed the bell tower ...

Three days four nights

This Izmir trip, just of three days and four nights, took us from one place to another and we found that we were friendly acquainted with the Izmir Otogar (bus station) at the end of this trip. This was our route; Istanbul to Izmir to Selcuk to Ephesus - Efes back to Selcuk to Sirince back to Selcuk to Izmir to Foca again back to Izmir to Bergama to the Bergama yol (road) and finally returned to Istanbul (via coast/sahil). We (being 15 from 10 countries...I hope ...
