... taking a horse up the first portion of the hike, and two of the women opted for that immediately. The rest of us proceeded. Within the first 10 feet, it was clear to me that this wasn’t like my other volcanic excursions. Those were more like walking up mild hills. No, this was Hiking. After the first little portion, which was still paved with steps, the other women and one of the men opted for a ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala junglelawyer... is beyond me but it was highly entertaining. There were at least 20 different designs and Ive attached them below in the picture section so you can get some idea of the magnitude of this festival.
We decided it would be a good idea to get some food before wandering around the city of Sumpango. People have given us a few warnings about street vendor food in Guatemala but we were feeling pretty lucky and ...

- The civil war is not discussed. Many Guatemalans don't even know about it. It is not taught in school or mentioned whatsoever.
- You can only get cell phone service while outdoors. Claro is terrible. Get Tigo.
- Volcanoes make excellent reference points.
- There are invisible bugs that eat you all day and night.
- Never poop after 10PM. There is not water to flush.
- Plantain potato chips are the bomb.

... horse, the ascend was naturally a piece of cake – although I could not help feeling sorry for the poor creature. But there was just no lave or volcano in sight. Until we finally reached a little plateau – and there I saw it: The characteristic conic shape of the volcano emitting a steady steam. But in between us and the peak there was this huge area of hardened lava and at the far distance I still saw people. I was afraid that I was going to be let off ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala chrisser71... week from 8 in the morning to 1 o'clock in the afternoon..
At one o'clock the first day this elderly man came and picked me up to escort me to the family with whom I was going to stay. I already knew a little bit about it, because I had spoken to the Dutch/New Zealand couple, Mieke and Hayden, who at the moment are staying with the same family.
The family consists of the mother, Magali, Fernando, the father and the kids Luisa and Juan, who are 5 years ...
... aren´t a nuisance and a ´no gracias´will do. We found a really cool wearhouse kinda place that was full of handcrafts and really unique bits and bobs that you´d only love to buy and bring home. Really cheap too. (That´s where the pictures of Brian on the Jesus chair were taken.) We also found an Irish bar - I know I know, you´re not supposed to go away to foreign countries and plonk yourself in an Irish bar but they did really good food, huge portions ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala doireann_brian... the starting point for many horse drawn carriage or horseback tours. To the south of the park was a building currently being restored, Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (Palace of the Captains General). To the east of the park was the Catedral de Santiago Apostal y San Jose Catedral where I watched a steady stream of people entering/exiting the church as one Saturday wedding started and another wedding finished. During a lull between weddings, I ...

Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala msdemeaner... place with 18 concentric cells around a circular patio. The cells were tiny and rather claustrophobic where the nuns used to sleep. We saw 1-2 other churches (ruins in part) though I can't remember the name of them for the moment before popping our heads into the textiles museum. It was a fascinating place as they explained the different outfits worn by the people of Guatemala and how you could tell which region they came from depending on the ...
Antigua Guatemala, Western Highlands, Guatemala salsita... early on New Year’s Day. What do I do now? I’ve got no local currency, and it’s too early to check in to a hotel. I guess I’ll just hang. There’s a kid sniffing glue a few steps away, right out in the open, broad daylight. It’s sad. I want to go take it out of his hands and toss it- or burn it- but I don’t. I don’t know what to do.
