Needing food, he offers to clean up the crystal glasses for the merchant so that people will want to buy them. As he’s cleaning them, the merchant sells two glasses, and perceives that as a good omen. He offers Santiago a job, and the boy tells the merchant about going to find his treasure in the desert.
