Today Gitta and Paula drove us over the big Afsluitdyke! I've been wanting to see this! We stopped at the monument and took in the views. There is a monument to the man Lely who was behind the dyke being built. The dyke is 7m above average sea level and about 30km long. Quite a lot of people driving and cycling across today. Thanks to our airbnb host's directions, we arrived in Harlingen without much difficulty. I was glad I had watched an old YouTube video of the building of the dikes in Holland because it gave me a lot more appreciation for what I was seeing. What a testament to what people can accomplish! Well what a crossind from texel to Vlieland , over a gangway on stilts (wooden) and on to a little boat, 20 minute sailing past a 400 strong seal colony and dolphins, then off onto another rickety gangway onto the back of what appears to be a 16 wheel flat back fire truck.
