Frustration – with the French train system: stations we’ve used in Paris are huge, have many different levels, it doesn’t seem very easy to find where you want to go, and the ticket buying system is difficult because not all machines take coins or notes and you can find yourself at a small Metro entry which only has a train pass top-up machine ...

... br> The last time I came here in 2000 the exterior was being cleaned and was covered in scaffolding. Today however it looked stunning with its pure white walls and domes framed against a cloudless deep blue sky. I got there about 2pm and it was quite busy, but not overwhelmingly so (apparently the best time to visit in order to miss the crowds is early morning or early evening, and preferably not on a Sunday).

Located a post office and bought some stamps ...
