Venice, day one...

Marshall went to the flooded from high tide with a full moon San Marco's square while I napped, took pictures, then came back to nap too. When we woke up it was overcast and pleasantly cool. ... or not you hit rocks". It was hilarious in person and I know I just can't get it across by describing it. He also explained the difference between a Skipper and a Captain with a photo of a dock. ... which admittedly cost only €3.50 but which also tasted like stomach bile... I had two glasses!

The canals are impressive, and the way the gondoliers navigate their way through the maze and under the bridges is really impressive and quite a sight. At times there were traffic jams but it was all handled quietly and serenely... Amazing!

On the whole it really is lovely here but I think its best enjoyed with some company and a fat wallet!

... restaurants. Large flocks of pigeons walked about on the square and flew here and there, attracted to the crumbs thrown for them by tourists. The light-up toys launched into the air all over the place, by the street hawkers or by tourists and children who had bought them. The air was filled with a cacophony of noise and music. We had definitely found the beating heart of Venice!

... we walked the waterfront and mingled with the cruise ship crowd for an hour or so. That was enough of that B.S. to last me the rest of the trip.
