... shortcut stairway up to the top of the ridge where I have the East San Marino in front... West San Marino behind... the capital to my left and my next town to my right. At first I figure I can still make it to my next town... but after walking a little ways, I realize I'm pushing my luck, and decide to backtrack to San Marino proper where I gaze out to the endless hills of San Marino and central Italy... then catch a bus back to Rimini and call it a ...

... 20, 2009 Day 256: 2 hours, 3.2 kms I continue on down the main highway a little bit. I’m the only pedestrian walking down it and it seems like there’s a police car going by every few minutes. Then I realize… it’s probably the same car! It must be a rather monotonous job, being a San Marino cop and driving back and forth across the country every 10 minutes! Kind of an odd way to end my ...

... to love the complexity and confusion of this land-- and admire its progress and the great accomplishments of its people in recent history, despite the huge barriers there are between them. And I guess I can understand a bit better why people would follow a guy like Mussolini who was able to instill in theM this sense of grandeur and unity that had been lost for 1500 years… Anyways… Back into town, I reach the castle, which is a pretty impressive ...

1617. Crossing the Rubicon--Again (Ita 179) Gatteo sul Mare, July 28, 2013, Day 250 3 hrs, 4 kms Next I head down to Rimini, Italy's party town. I would expect the hostels to be booked way in advance at this time of year--but no, there's plenty of room. I book for 3 nights. Why? Well, I'm planning on finishing a Superhike here and Rimini is going to be my base. This will be my "San Marino Superhike" in which I'm going to finish exploring every town ...
