This may seem incredibly superficial, but one of the hardest things about preparing to travel for a variety loving person like myself is choosing which clothes and shoes to bring, and which to leave at home. ... to note from Gerard: the bikes cost about 7E a day to rent for a day in Leiden and the bike place is open from 5am to 2 am. The bike place is on the other side of the train station in the newer part of town. We're going to Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp tomorrow. We'll be there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

... visited the Deltaworks in southern Holland. I hadn't been aware that there was a horrifying flood there in 1953, the result being that they have built an engineering marvel to rival the Panama Canal to keep the water out. We visited one of the big dikes and saw how it was built. Afterwards, we went on to Kinderdijk--the best preserved set of windmills in the country. There are 19 left there now and we took a picturesque canal boat ride ...

... And it turned out there were a couple of cafes with canal-side seating just across the canal.

So I had a great time, sitting by the canal, drinking some strong Belgian beer and admiring the wonderful view. It was very relaxing. And one of my favorite activities in Europe.

After a couple of hours and a couple of beers, the line at the Anne Frank house finally dwindled to nothing. So I went over and got right in.
