To Bourganes - Day 23

A travel blog entry by sydandval

Another really cold morning. we had connsidered going back to Reykjavik by way of Olafsjockur (and the tunnel) but the weather looked glum and we had seen one side of the snowy hills from a distance already yesterday and we did not think a closer viewpoint would be any better. Instead we decide on the smaller side route through Sandasbrokus. This …

Snaefellsness Peninsula - Day 24

A travel blog entry by sydandval

It was cold and rainy when we awoke and continued that way as we drive around the peninsula stopping at various places to look at the small harbours and looking for seals, which were not there. Near the end of the peninsula the weather improved somewhat but we still could not see the glacier because of the low cloud level but the cloud did continue …

Through the lava fields

... are lots of guests here.

(Later) Our evening was a little odd: our dinner turned out to be a cream of corn soup, and a sort of vegetarian lasagne, all served by Verina from the really rather ropey kitchen, but during the meal Elina, the very garrulous female owner (Dutch in origin) and Jon, the very taciturn male one (Icelandic) came in, and she chatted about her horse show where she'd been all day, while he grumped about and ...

First day in Iceland

... and the rocks could settle into a new configuration at any time. (Actually I'm sure they are stable enough, but the feeling one gets is of very recent geological activity.) The fault feels like nothing so much as a city street running clear across the amazing empty landscape.

We had planned to cut across country to our final destination for the day, but encountered a fierce sign that may have just been saying "this road not for ...

Heading for the Frozen North

... we'd go and get on the bus that was waiting outside even though it was still 20 minutes before we were due to leave; the driver opened the hold (or boot, or whatever it's called on a bus) which was closed, we chucked our bags in, jumped into the bus, bought our tickets (only 10 pounds each all the way, bargain!) and we were off! So we'd clearly got onto an earlier bus. And when we got to Ferrytoll, where we were to change, we only waited for about five minutes (instead of the ...

Clean facilities and quiet place. Very good service with helpful people. Great mountains view. Beds could be a bit more comfortable and breakfast does not have a lot of choices but overall a great experience.

We had an excellent stay in Hotel Bru in May 2012. The dinners were excellent (we rarely eat in restaurants, let alone hotel restaurants) so this is a great compliment to the owner/chef. The upstairs rooms are small but so is the price.
