Driving the Autobahn

The ship docked earlier than scheduled, and we left the ship shortly after 11 a.m. There was a long line of taxis waiting on the dock. After a twenty minute ride to the airport, we found the Avis counter and got the keys to the car—an upgrade to a Mercedes E class station wagon. Philip felt comfortable driving it, and we were ready to get …

We had a full day to explore all of Luebeck. Most of the medieval sights are withing walking distance of the hotel so we made a nice day seeing lots of them. We first went to St. Jacobs Church, but it was closed for a "divine service" so we only saw the outside. Looked like they were having a Saturday morning wedding from the way the people going …

Hansetag Festival

Back in the 13th to 17th centuries, a Hanseatic League was formed between the commercial and defensive merchant guilds and their towns along the coast of Northern Europe. These towns had their own legal system and even their own armies and Lübeck was the capital. Every year they put on a festival in a different city and I was lucky enough to be here for it this year!

The festival started off last Thursday with ...

I am glad I took the time out of my day because it was nice to see the church, something I had been meaning to do for the past two months but had not gotten around to yet!

We stayed at the Hotel Anno 1216 for two nights and had a great stay. We had the suite just off the lobby with the Baroque painted stucco ceiling. The suite is just gorgeous with three huge windows that open onto a lovely patio. When we arrived we were met by an English-speaking gentleman who checked us in, showed us to and around our suite, suggested a better place to park, and helped with the luggage when we returned with it. He suggested some great restaurants then made the reservations for us. He also fixed and served our breakfast the next two mornings. Service could not have been better! I highly recommend the Hotel Anno 1216 in Luebeck.
