The day started early as we had to negotiate the dreaded Jakarta traffic to get to the airport, but we made it there with plenty of time to spare. Our flight went smoothly and we landed in a small domestic airport in Malang. It was very different from any other airport I have ever flown into, the fields surrounding the runways were being farmed by men with hand tools and cows with plows, there was no big fence separating the runways from surrounding roads ...

No one did anything so I suggested they draw some animals. ... names of our hotels and acted as if he knew where thy were. The Australian couple had stayed at theirs before so had a rough idea where is was based on some of the landmarks. When they tried telling the driver to turn right, he turned left and literally wouldn't listen to them. We were driving around for probably more than an hour before he stopped and picked up a randomer off the street for him to show him where to go. We eventually got there at like 2, so ...

... but I realized it's fun. The locals can tell you a lot about the surroundings and in the end I would pay them our lunch or dinner. And to be honest, choice is easily made between someone friendly showing you around who you give some money, or a grumpy person who doesn't care whether you have a good time but only wants your money. From Bukittinggi I took the bus to another lake, as beautiful as lake Toba. Again, there were not so many backpackers so was mainly hanging out ...
