Goodbye San Juan Islands

... There is a real spirit to the islands. I am so impressed by the creativity and integrity of the people who live there. There is a concern for their neighbors and the desire to work the land in a meaningful way.

I'm leaving the islands with my homework: study the natives that populated the islands, reading about the 'Pig’ War, learning more about the ...

Ferry to Friday Harbor- time to meet the group!

I have lived in Oregon for over two decades and have never visited the San Juan Islands. It's a part of Washington I just hadn’t explored, until now. People that have been to the islands always say how beautiful it is, how invigorating it is to kayak the waters or hike the hills. The last three days I've been kayaking and camping with Outdoor Odyssey. I'm exhausted but had a wonderful time. Kayaking is an excellent way to see wild life. We saw deer, eagles, starfish, jellyfish, porpoise, harbor seals, sea otters, and finally the best of all ORCAS! The guide (Nikken) provided excellent gourmet food and lots of patience with our group - which had varied levels of kayaking experience. Only draw back was the head cold and muscle strain I ...

Victoria, BC

At approximately 3:00 p.m. we docked at the Victoria, BC pier. We disembarked and waited in a line for transportation into the downtown area.

Since vans were a premium, we split up 3/3 and took separate cabs to the Empress Hotel. Once at the hotel we saw a Grayline tent set up to sell tour tickets to Butchart Gardens that left every couple of hours.
