My last two days in Tenerife

... city at 5:00 in the morning or a stroll along the sand on the beach, I always have the potential to make an impact on people and let them impact me. This island, my friends, the hospital and this culture have impacted me significantly more than I thought they would, and I can only hope that I could do the same for them. Now that I've had my five weeks, I'm ready to go home and get ready for the rest of my life--it's been a good one so far, but I can tell it's only going to get better!

Gynecology

Week 5 is here! I can't believe how fast this whole experience has gone by! It feels like just yesterday I was anxiously running around the airport hopelessly trying to make it to my terminal on time, and now here I am running around La Laguna as if it were my home town.

For my final week, I'm in the Gynecology unit with one of the session A fellows, Mary Hunter. Today was our first day, and I have to say that I'm more excited for the specialty now than ...

... village with an ice cream shop, cheese store and park to chill in. We had an awesome time, and I took way more pictures than I needed to. Although the views from the mountain were breathtaking and the village was sick, I think the highlight of the day was lunch. The coordinators anticipated more of us coming on the hike (there are about 40 in our group now, and only about 14 people showed up), so they ordered more food than necessary. We started with a lot of bread, then ...

Week 4

Today we had a really funny patient in internal medicine who I have to talk about here. Her name was Irene, and she didn't speak a lick of Spanish because she's Scottish (though she has lived in Tenerife for upwards of 20 years). She was in the hospital because she had some kind of serious dementia and diabetes. Her dementia caused her to speak very slowly and to occasionally say things that didn't make sense or that were incomprehensible. Her face ...
