... off to run the entire length of the beach and back, ears flapping in the wind, and evidently ecstatic/ exhausted upon returning. Despite having initially planned to get a taxi boat back, after some chill time on the beach, we decided we were ready for the return leg. Knowing the route and the distance helped, and we shaved half an hour off our original time. Thanks also to our canine pace setter, Pedro. Dinner of a pizza and beer was ...

... to jump on just as the skies opened with full on storm. We were all crouched under towels and sarongs trying not to freeze - you couldn't look up without being battered in the face by the rain. ... archaeological evidence of human existence.  The Tupi were hunter-gatherers who were known to practice cannibalism. This was evidenced in large shell mounds, bonfires, burial sites and man sharpener-polisher stones still visible on the island to this day. The Portuguese arrived in the beginning of the 16th century and immediately began exploiting the Brazilwood tree. Over the first century of Brazilwood traffic an estimated 2 million ...

... rainforest. One of the most striking is that of the howler monkey, a creature we were unable to glimpse but whose presence was made very audible to us by its guttural menacing howl. We also got to observe the infamous spider wasp doing its gruesome work. This rather large and scary looking black wasp is known for using its sting to paralyse its unfortunate victims (usually spiders) after which it lays its egg inside it. The paralysed victim then serves up a fresh and tasty ...
