Charming, well-appointed hotel set in former home of famous Peruvian archaeologist Julio C Tello. Original murals on walls and fabulous location 5 mins from Larcomar shopping centre. Walking distance to shops and markets in Miraflores. 24 hour reception, safe location, wonderful beds, pillows, patios, breakfast included. Served us 4:30 am breakfast to accommodate our early flight.

... tour around the canyon, stunning views, mini treks, condors, llama steaks, hot springs and traditional dancing. The next stop was Cuzco, probably my favourite stop so far. A fantastic city at 3300m above sea level, the perfect place to acclimatise to the altitude before Machu Picchu. A trek up to the Cristo Blanco or (lovingly nicknamed 'White Jesus') statue overlooking the city one evening showed how hard walking more than two steps at altitude is. Watching ...

... It was nice to have a low key morning.

The home visits were interesting - I only got to the first 2 because I really wanted to go to see and help out in the Youth in Action program. The first home was very large and well off in comparison to many in the neighbourhood. However, the family works very hard. Both parents sell vegetables in the market from 3 am to 10 pm. They have 3 children and the oldest watches the 2 younger and puts them ...
