Opatija was developed as a resort town
for the aristocracy of the Hapsburg empire so it has had wonderful
public works projects along the foreshore. This includes the
Lungomare, a 13 km long elegant public walkway along the shoreline.
Everywhere else the seashore is alienated by private dwellings and
massive hotels that like to make their bit of seashore ...
and salads to choose. We had smoked anchovies as an antipasto with
bread and a salad of cucumber, the yellow potatoes that we have seen
extensively, beans and tomatoes and a little lettuce. The olive oil
on the table was really good. The house white was also really good
local wine of the style we we become used to.

The next day we spent the day at the beach. Tom and I played in the water on the rocks we found a black and white crab we also swam and threw little rocks into the water.

... shabby. I was dog tired but we went out exploring Kensington High Street and gawking at it all. It is a culture shock after the peace and quiet and space of the mountains. ... wound our way down down to the seaside and walked back along the incredible walkway that hugs the shoreline. It was a grand way to end our grand tour. Time to pack up,then the Hiking Babes met for a final drink to consume all the remains if wine, eat up the cheese and crackers and nuts and chocolate, then join the others for a final meeting.
