... due to an technical fault") were "on" - the hydro electric plant built on the river in recent years ruins the falls the rest of the time by reducing the flow of water to a trickle.

Now I am about to go and see King Fasilidas's extraordinary palace.

AHA! Jacques has just arrived here in this filthy flea-ridden internet cafe. Jacques is a very grumpy Frenchman but I must greet him. A tout a l'heure!

Gondar, Gonder, Ethiopia castewart... up I can confess, that all other 3'471 kids while traveling in Ethiopia were simply friendly smiling, running towards me and waving a lot, being very excited to see a faranji like me! I can live with this.

Here in Gondar I have to break the circle and wait one extra day to prevent, that I again go to cross the border at Sundays, just like the other 3 crossings before. Businesses are limitded at this day, so I spend Sunday to visit the castle of Gondar. Monday is Sudan-Day!
Gondar, Gonder, Ethiopia pajas... probably adding some new swear words into their little vocabularies. I can't go anywhere without them following me, into stores and up and down the street. Ethiopians get in your mind, not in your face. "What are you looking for?" a voice calls out of the darkness. "A WORLD THAT DOESN'T INCLUDE YOU!" an answer responds in kind. This is getting old fast, so I duck into a candle-lit Ethiopian-style resto-bar and order up a beer. It ...
Gonder, Ethiopia hardiek... in the Simiens. The vistas were amazing - we also saw colobus monkeys and gelada baboons - both animals sporting lush, long coats, unlike other species of monkey I've seen in Africa (we were apparently incredibly lucky to see the latter, without going on an extended trek). Gelada baboons, also known as "bleeding heart" baboons for the bare patch of skin on their chests, indicating their sexual status, are endemic to Ethiopia. Typical of most ...
Gonder, Ethiopia donna321... done up by world heritage and so in the future should be fully furnished etc. We were the only people there and hired a very informative guide. My life has settled into a nice little routine. We all meet for coffee after 5 in the centre of town and again for dinner. Between I'm reading lots and have also started motorcycle lessons - apart from a couple of accidental wheelies its going well, just haven't mastered stopping with any ...
Gonder, Ethiopia simon.f... and adobe huts, hundreds of them! People were everywhere, working in the fields of walking on the road. We saw large herds of skinny cattle being herded in the fields or crossing the road. You have to be on full alert all the time to avoid collisions with people, animals or pot-holes. The border crossing took two hours, very fast ...
Gonder, Ethiopia hans-jenny... of castles, quite old. The hotel is slightly newer, but is not yet up to modern demands. Only one socket, hot water after 4PM only, and the waiter forgets easily which brand of beer you ordered. The fence next to the viewpoint has a sign "Do not lean onto", instead of being strong enough to prevent one tumbling into the void. The pool is deep, but without water. However, the coke is cold as is the beer. Tomorrow we hope to make it to the Sudanese border and cross into country nr. 3.
Gonder, Ethiopia robertandtanja... given huge responsibilities very early on (they are f1 equivalent) and, again a result of fear, rarely ask seniors for help which I fear is not conducive to good patient care. The ward I am working on, when not seeing emergencies or generally touring the hospital in search of pathology, is a male ward with 34 beds. Each intern is allocated 5 or so patients and cares for them more as an individual than as part of a team. There are ward rounds twice ...
Gonder, Ethiopia simon.f... it wouldn't have done any good since the light bulbs had actually been removed. I was trying to tell the time, but it never seemed to move from 6:30 (the hands had fallen due to no electricity) and other clocks were completely blocked off. No wonder the flights are always on time - lol! Finally it was time to walk out to our little Focker 50. I was amazed at how quickly the boarding process went when all you have to do is hand ...
Gonder, Ethiopia 2totango... fast approximately 250 days out of the year, most people want to be priests, and where Christ's baptism is the most celebrated festival of the year (with dancing in the street like David!). We're lucky to even celebrate Christ's birth and death - and that we *******ize with secular notions! In comparison, these people have nothing - including basics like water, electricity and money. Yet they have so much more ...
