Ayvalik, Balikesir, Turkey traceybelle... out the walk was a mere training exercise for what was to come the following day as we staggered seven kilometres up a mountain to see the Acropolis sounding even worse than the battered Renault 12s that asthmatically spluttered past us. Even the cab drivers at the top applauded us when we arrived and told us how impressive a climb that was.

Note to Tania, next year on my birthday can we just go to the beach please????
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey welovemondays... have to wonder how they did the big stuff. The really big stuff. And not only just squaring and putting the stuff up. But, what about the whole logistics of the industry? There had to be the design, the ordering of the materials, the quarrying and transport of the stuff. Sure, it was probably done a lot by slave labor, but . . . . Man, there is so much to learn about! After nosing around two segment sets of those stones for a spell I ...

Bergama, Izmir, Turkey asci... at night where in Bergama the whole population comes out and promenades up and down the main drag stopping here and there for sweets, ice cream, and of course tea. Perhaps the tenet of hospitality which is ingrained in the Turkish people is linked to Islam and Ramadan produces a greater attempt to welcome visitors. We can only hope that this aspect of their traditional society can withstand the westernization and exposure to tourists that is so prevalent here.
Bergama, Izmir, Turkey jenandjeffmilum... 16th century. As for the town, Bergama is much less visited than Ephesus and that is what is nice about it. The village has a very laid back feel, is very friendly and we liked it immediately. We stayed ýna typýcal guest house wýth a lovely famýly and are actually sorry to leave...but ýt ýs on to Selçuk whých wýll be our base as we explore Efes for a few days.
Bergama, Turkey smyth... the multi-mode transportation option and just cabbed it back to the Guest House on the far side of town - 75 Turkish lira - yikes! That's a $60 cab ride - more than all three of our round-trip bus tickets to Bergama combined! Bergama, Turkey zigdog1We took a 2 day tour that drove down to Gallipolli with an overnight stop in Cannakule. Gallipolli is amazing, we spent the day lunching at Anzac Cove, crouching in the trenches, visiting Lone Pine and seeing an amazing sunset at the Turkish Memorial. This is also they only place that you could be standing in Europe, then catching a 10 minute ferry ride and setting foot in another Continent ...
