Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mikelaThis entry is all about camels and desert. We went on a two night camel trek, leaving from the town of Bikaner. Our guide recommended that we get a camel cart for our luggage and that would also allow Rajiv and I to trade off riding the camel. After being on the camel the first day, we were both thankful to have the cart. Not being used to sitting astride, riding a camel can get quite uncomfortable after a couple of hours! We rode about ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India kalsi_kaur... learning about each other's countries, and me entertaining everyone with my bubblegum during most journeys! We got to Bikaner and the whole place is just one massive road works! ALL roads are being dug up, all traffic was even more chaotic with JCB's, tractors and wheelbarrows absolutely everywhere. Our Hotel was right next to the Fort. The road completely surrounding the Fort was also being dug up. Our Hotel was a stunning 100 years old with turrets, ancient rat ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mrsdpThirty kilometres south of Bikaner is the town of Deshnok. Here is the temple of Karni Mata, or as it's commonly known, the "Rat Temple". After a 45 minute ride wedged into a local bus, we arrived at the town. This was, unquestioningly, MY trip to visit the temple. Danayi, who suffers from a significant fear of rats, had shown a disappointing lack of enthusiasm when I proposed the idea of visiting the temple. To her credit, she accompanied me, and even ...

Bikaner, India buddha_belly... courtyard houses); examining the exquisitely detailed wall paintings inside the Jain temple; visiting the spectacular fort, where I admired photos of the Maharajas and their stupendously curled moustaches and was amused to see, preserved in a glass case, the special funnel-shaped silver soup spoon they used to avoid morsels getting caught in their immaculately groomed facial hair! Less impressive, though certainly ...
Bikaner, India fishtails04... woken through the night by the noise of camel *******! Our camel drivers looked after us really well, cooking us 3 great meals a day on an open fire (lunch and dinner were very spicy curries!) and singing and generally entertaining us all the way. They also taught us a bit of Hindi and how to cook desert curries and chapattis. We were aching quite a lot, and were very grubby by the time we returned to Jaisalmer on the fourth day.
Jaisalmer, India markandlydia... everywhere. Samir says that it's part of the "real Indian" experience, whatever that means :) Tapestries ----- Finally today was a day, Gita found a shop that she trusted. She ended up buying a tapestry from the shop and promised to return for more. She felt it was legitimate because the shop did high volumes of export and did not need to screw her over a couple of bucks. Moreover they were more honest in their starting price as it was ...
