Town of The Large Canoes

A travel blog entry by jenni-louise

This is a top pick!

Fantastic driving day today; Missouri - or, Missoura - means town of the large canoes. We are lovin' it! Lot's of relics, great road. The folk in MO have a sense of humour akin to us Aussies - they know how to take the ****, so to speak.

East of Rolla we stopped at Mule's Trading Post which is full of memorabilia, Route 66 souvenirs and …

... see it as we continued through town and also in the next town. What we saw just took my breath away. Buildings missing, trees broken in half, but then other buildings nearby not touched. Also a car that has obviously been tossed around. Takes you breath away. We tried to find one of the Route66 landmarks - a carved brick wall mural, but there was no building there anymore. We then left Kansas and entered the state of Oklahoma. Our third state for today. There was the ...

It was a beautiful ride through the “Ouachita” and “Boston” mountains, many of the hardwood trees were still budding or the leaves were still in the infant stage, with many shades of green. Lunch was at Wendy’s in ...

Another scorching day

... a cold drink. This place is amazing , no TV just an old gramaphone radio playing 40's music - perfect. Tomorrow off to Kansas and Oklahoma - loving it! It's really difficult to put the miles in, although today did 130, as every time you stop people just want to talk. To get checked in to the motel took over an hour as the lady was so proud of her motel and just wanted to talk us through everything. Should make time up when we get to the ...

Good rates, comfortable, clean lodging with gorgeous period bathroom. Right next to the lake for sunset and sunrise photo op's, and within walking distance of Carthage town. Short drive to Red Oaks Village. Highly recommend this hotel - so does Gary Turner.....don't know who he is? Get on the road and find out....
