... to quarry for the rocks to build city walls!) There's a fantastic Greek Theatre, with seating hewn out of the rock. Aeschylus' tragedies were performed here with him in attendance. Plato is thought to have spoken here too. There's a huge limestone quarry, which provided all the stone for the ancient city, and catacombs where 7000 war prisoners were held after the 413BC Syracuse v Athens war. As you can tell, I was quite intrigued by this site, and its history, ...

... think of the mountain as extending all the way from the ocean to the main volcano 35km's inland. The reason is that there is an estimated 350 volcanic craters that are part of the land around the volcano and all part of the same volcano system. Etna is 3,350 metres (about 11,000 feet) and today we would bus to the end of the road at 2,000 metres and walk around more recently extinct craters. The volcano has four active craters, all out of walking distance for us, ...

At least it didin't come down to a coin toss, as both options had great things going for them, but in the end, we chose to spend the day wandering through the town of Siracusa and Ortigia, rather than the seaside resort of Taormina.

First, we packed up our bags for our room change - the only downside of showing up in Catania one day early - and headed downstairs for one of the most extensive(and delicious) Buffet breakfasts I've ever seen ...
