... crater. It was incredible that you could see directly into it, seeing the bubbling liquid and the huge plumes I steam coming off. The only downside though was the lovely rotting egg smell you get from the sulphur. After spending a long time looking at these amazing views we headed back to the hotel. Half of us walked but Adam and the others paid for a motorbike (dirt bike) to take them back down, which did look like a lot of fun! Love love ...

... lungs and thighs were excited for a decent. This excitement only lasted a short while as I saw the condition of what we were meant to climb down. It was mentally exhausting analyzing each step. Mathematical calculations of which had the least risk of slipping and which branch had the best restraint to hold your weight while you made your next move. ... working week!). Of course the trip was long. Really long. But in the night I could sleep quite well and during he day I was reading, listening to some music and staring out of the window. The landscape was beautiful. So many times I wanted to yell at the driver to stop so I could take some photos... And we stopped regularly for food and leg stretching. ... and the guides wait for us until we appear after a shower and unpacking. There are 160 registered guides in Bukit Lawang and competition is rife. We sign up for an over-night trek but for the 8th of Feb as we'd like the 7th just to explore.
We wake up the next morning and it's my birthday today! I have an influx of emails and messages which is lovely. We head to the market which was recommended to us but it's really smelly and dirty so we head back ...

... but the road is twisty and in very bad condition, so it took a little bit over an hour to get to the top of the mountain. Once there, we had to pay an entry ticket... but the whole thing was very shady. In the end, we could bargain the price. The driver also had a homestay in the village. It was already late and everything was closed, so we didn't have anything to choose from and ended up staying there. So far, this was the most difficult and ugly trip we've had.
