We stayed here as part of a tour but felt trapped by the location and lack of nearby alternative amenities. If you stay here you have to depend on the hotels occasional waterfront shuttles (or pay taxis), eat at their restaurant (good, but not Kuching's best), pay their outrageous laundry fees (if you need to refresh like we did) and hang out at the hotel in the evenings (shuttle stops running). Otherwise its tired and poorly maintained (needs paint, repairs, etc) but clean and provides good friendly service.

In my opinion the hotel cost is also high given the location, age, low level of maintenance and amenities. We liked being near the waterfront in a higher class hotel for the same rate better.

Returning to Kuching felt like coming home. We enjoyed great Chicken Rice and Sarawak Laksa and then deviated from our usual routes and visited the Sarawak Musuem and adjacent aquarium. Knowing Gem's limited attention span when in comes to museums, I hadn't expected much from Bardy. But he performed outstandingly and after an hour of excitedly …

Day 24: We arrived early in Kuching, Borneo at the Basaga hotel before having a wander around the local shops. We then met the rest of the group and had our first meal together and got to know one another before the real adventure begins.

Having done this myself to look-up the spelling of some before writing this blog, we can say that we did actually see all of those listed, which is, pretty cool. Among them are long-tailed macaques (pesky little critters), silvered langurs, plantain squirrels, a Bornean bearded pig and monitor lizards. However our favourite has to be the Proboscis monkeys, they are the ones with the ...

... very hot work), then had a delicious locally-prepared lunch at Abai village. We did not want to leave Abai as it is so laid back, however in the afternoon we proceeded another 40 km further upriver, to the Kinabatangan riverside lodge. Also very relaxed , we all wore just a sarong to dinner that night. No makeup or shoes on this trip, everyone went totally native. Another late afternoon lake and river cruise. My only regret is that I did not see a Pygmy ...
